The Nebraska Deterrence Laboratory has been awarded a University of Nebraska Collaboration Initiative Grant for their project, "Multi-Actor Risk Analysis Methodology." Tyler White, a faculty member in the Department of Political Science at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL), is part of the laboratory.
The lab aims to help agencies and organizations across the government and military better anticipate emerging national and international security challenges and deter future threats. The team, comprised of faculty and students from UNL and the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), is developing and testing tools that can help inform decision-making and analysis for national strategy. This award allows them to continue the organization's work and that of their graduate students.
White is director of the National Security Studies program at UNL and a National Strategic Research Institute fellow. He said the Deterrence Lab offers is a model for how the campuses can find common research interests and collaborate and use those collaborations to engage and serve key outside stakeholders.
"While UNL, UNO, and the Law College all have experts in deterrence and nuclear weapons policy, the Deterrence Lab has been able to leverage academics across departments on three system campuses," he said. "We have been attracting grant dollars, doing exciting work, and—most importantly, I think—creating a model for how to build a critical mass for the development of bigger projects."
